Purpose. This document describes tests measuring properties of single component, selfcuring liquid anaerobic compounds used for locking, retaining, or sealing of machined flange surfaces, and threaded or cylindrical assemblies. Anaerobics used for sealing casting porosity are not covered by this standard.

Forward.

This document identifies which tests (Table A1) are assigned to each functional application (e.g., locking, sealing, retaining, etc.). See Appendix A.

Test Selection. This document provides test selection criteria for creating and revising anaerobic specifications. Use Appendix A, Table A1 to select the appropriate tests for the chosen anaerobic (998XXXX) use.

This document is referenced in specific 998XXXX‘s to maintain a focal point for test content, procedures, and eliminates the need to reproduce them in each document.

Applicability.

General tests (3.2 through 3.16) relate to product selection, consistency and short-term compatibility in application use and storage. Also they permit comparison of production compounds.

Performance Tests (3.17) evaluate the retaining and sealing required in locking, retaining or sealing of machined flange surfaces, threaded or cylindrical assemblies in contact with engine fluids. They permit comparison and measure the performance level of production compounds.

Finish Influence. General tests for breakaway and prevailing torque, static shear strength (pin and collar), and fluid compatibility use test parts with plain finishes to minimize their effect on anaerobic test results. These standard tests achieve repeatable and reproducible results on the liquid anaerobic compounds. The tester and end user may test production released finishes to measure their influence on general or performance test results in the specified documents.

Applicable Anaerobic Compounds. 998XXXX materials referencing this document are listed in Table 3.

Related Documents. See 9985473, 9985490, GM6124M, GM6175M, or GM6194M performance requirements for preapplied adhesive coated threaded fasteners. This document does not cover preapplied thread sealants.

Definitions.

Anaerobic adhesive: an adhesive that is kept in the uncured state by oxygen, as in air, and cures in the absence of oxygen when exposed to metal ions, especially copper or iron.

Breakaway torque (BAT): the initial torque required to break the bond, measured at the first movement between the nut and bolt, when unscrewing an unseated (zero tension) assembly.

Prevailing off-torque (PT): maximum torque measured individually in the off direction at 90, 180, 270 and 360 degrees of rotation after the thread compound breakaway torque measurement on the same test piece.

Slip or clearance fit: In cylindrical (friction-drive) assemblies the joining of shaft and hub elements at the same temperature without applying force. The cured retaining compound (between elements) transmits the load or torque.

Press or interference fit: In cylindrical (friction-drive) assemblies the joining of shaft and hub elements at the same temperature applying axial force. The friction contact and cured retaining compound transmits the load or torque. See American Standards Association (ASA) Std. #B4.1.

Serviceable: The anaerobic joints can be separated. Mating parts or components may be cleaned and reused.

Non-serviceable: The anaerobic joints are permanent. Bonded members cannot be reused.

Table A1 Categories. See Appendix A and ASTM D4800 and ASTM D5363 for further description information.

Thread locking & sealing (TL & S): Anaerobic compounds for threaded parts (as replacement for mechanical locking devices, e.g. washers, helical inserts, etc.). Prevents corrosion and fluid leaks between fitted surfaces. Locking strength varies from low (serviceable) to non-serviceable (high strength). Used on nuts, studs, adjusting or set screws.

Retaining and Sealing (R&S): Anaerobic compounds for cylindrical parts as an alternative or supplement for slip, interference (press) fits, (e.g. pins, keys inserts, etc.) or shrink fits (e.g. gear bonding). Used on cup plugs, and oil level indicator tubes to block. Can replace staking, knurling, and set screws. Prevents corrosion and fluid leaks between fitted surfaces. Seals diametral gaps from 0.13 mm to 0.38 mm. Retaining (R): These anaerobic joints are permanent. Used on aluminum and steel tubing of the type described in GM123M (as alternative or supplement for slip, interference (press) fit connections. Replaces some brazing, soldering, and welding. Prevents corrosion and fluid leaks between fitted surfaces. For thin wall tubular connections of less than or equal to 0.25 mm diametral clearance, and thick, rigid tubular connections with less than or equal to 0.15 mm, 0.25 mm, or 0.40 mm diametral clearance.

Gasket: Formed-In-Place anaerobics for rigid metal to metal joints. Maximum operating temperature is 150°C. Do not use in fuel applications. Serviceable in joints. Some are deaerated to permit automated dispensing. Uses include, end cap to block, or CR/SHF RR OIL SEAL for less than or equal to 0.25 mm gap.
