Purpose.
To determine whether a vehicle's safety belt system meets the functional operation and design requirements of:
a. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 208 (FMVSS 208) as amended in the Federal Register dated May 23, 1995.
b. Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 208 (CMVSS 208) as amended in the Canada Gazette dated January 13, 1993.

Applicability.
Passenger cars, trucks, buses, and multipurpose passenger vehicles equipped with safety belt systems manufactured on or after September 1, 1991. Applicable to vehicles having a GVWR of 4545 kg (10 000 lbs) or less.
Although CMVSS 208 and FMVSS 208 requirements may apply, this specification was not written to evaluate the following (see FMVSS 208 for definitions):
• forward control vehicles
• open-body type vehicles
• vehicles outfitted for handicap use
