DefStan 00-102 describes the standards supported by UK Defence’s Spatial Data Infrastructure. These standards are approved via the Geospatial and Imagery Standards Delivery Group (GISDG) on behalf of UK Defence and are based on nationally or internationally agreed formats that are then maintained and supplied by the respective SGCs to enable interoperability. All Defence platforms and systems are to obtain data in these standards direct from the appropriate SGC unless a formal exemption has been granted via the SDAG. Compliance with these standards can be challenging with sS platforms requiring geospatial information to enable them to support or be supported by other services (e.g. Aeronautical Information, designed for an air platform, may also be required for a Royal Navy asset). In addition to a Joint and/or Allied military context, Defence operates with Partners Across Government (PAG) in support of national security and resilience. The ability to be interoperable in this regard is of equal importance.

The in-service lifecycle of capabilities will not necessarily align with lifecycle of a particular standard and format as supporting technology evolves. This edition of DefStan 00-102 not only details UK Defence geospatial standards, it also provides indication on the expected lifecycle of these standards so that Project Teams are better able to manage and respond to forecast future updates.
