This Standard defines the procedure for the preparation of drawings and associated lists for the manufacture and/or inspection of Service materiel. It deals with the formats of drawing sheets and lists, the system of relating parts to their assemblies, and the requirements for associated lists. It is to be applied in conjunction with BS 308 and BS 5536, which govern aspects not defined in this Standard.

The Standard is intended to govern the preparation and content of engineering drawings and associated lists in such a way that they will provide all the necessary design, engineering, manufacturing, packaging, quality assurance and any necessary safety information required for the procurement of an item, equipment, or system, and so that items, equipments, or systems procured to such drawings and lists will be within the specified physical and performance characteristics.

This Standard does not cover requirements for illustrations and diagrams for handbooks and similar publications. These are defined in JSP 183 and requirements for such documents should be borne in mind during the preparation stages of the associated engineering drawings so that the latter can be adopted, with minimum rework, for publication purposes.
