Issue 2 of NR/L2/TRK/042 covers the governance for the validation of track geometry measurement systems approved for use on Network Rail infrastructure. The standard also outlines the minimum requirements expected to be demonstrated by projects seeking approval for new track geometry measurement systems.

It is applicable to both primary and secondary track geometry measurement systems used on Network Rail infrastructure to measure track geometry in accordance with NR/L2/TRK/001/mod11, and report track geometry in accordance with NR/L2/TRK/038.

The standard is not applicable for the validation of On Track Machines (e.g. tampers).

The standard applies to those who manage approved track geometry measurement systems used on Network Rail infrastructure, as well as for projects validating new track geometry measurement systems as part of the approvals process.

Purpose

The purpose of NR/L2/TRK/042 is to define the measurement and validation requirements for all train-borne track geometry systems.

The standard has adopted the requirements outlined in the Euro Norm standard (EN13848-2:2020) where appropriate, with guidance provided where practices might differ (i.e. on filtering and testing requirements).

The standard specifies assurance requirements for validating the performance of train-borne track geometry recording systems in providing Network Rail with valid data that is fit for purpose and consistent across a range of track geometry data sources.

The standard helps Network Rail to achieve compliance with NR/L2/TRK/001/mod11 and NR/L2/TRK/038 by stipulating the validation governance and measurement tolerances of approved and proposed track geometry recording systems.
