This Network Rail standard applies to:

a) events occurring on Network Rail Managed Infrastructure (NRMI), including Network Rail managed stations.

b) accidents involving Network Rail employees whilst on duty and not occurring on NRMI, including whilst travelling in road vehicles (whether owned, hired or leased by Network Rail).

c) accidents involving employees of contractors whilst undertaking work for Network Rail.

Note 1 The requirements of this standard are additional to the statutory reporting requirements of the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995 (RIDDOR 1995) and Rail Accident Investigation Board (RAIB) Regulations 2005.

Note 2 Nothing in this standard relieves Network Rail of any obligation to report as the employer or responsible person under RIDDOR 1995, or as a duty holder under the RAIR Regulations 2005.

Purpose

To provide a consistent, comprehensive and structured process for the statutory reporting of accidents, incidents and occupational ill health to the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) and to the Office of Rail Regulation (ORR), the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) or a local enforcing authority.
