This module applies to all Network Rail and contract staff engaged in the maintenance and renewal of Network Rail’s infrastructure. In the event of unseasonably warm weather occurring during the winter period, NR/L3/OPS/021/02 Summer Management shall be referred to.

Purpose

This module describes the Network Rail procedures involved in the preparation of the infrastructure for the winter period. Each year Network Rail’s Winter Preparations are focused on the period between 1st October and 31st March. The arrangements shall remain in place after 31st March to deal with any unseasonably cold weather, which may occur in spring, or before the next year’s preparations are finalised.

This module details the preparations and mitigations managed by Network Rail during the winter period. Its purpose is to:

a) Enable teams across the Regions to understand their role in preparing for the winter period; and

b) Detail the winter risks which the industry faces.
