This procedure applies to the managers of the following groups of operational employees:
• Crossing keepers
• Signallers
• Moveable bridge operators
• Shift signalling manager
• Mobile operations manager and mobile incident officers
• Route operations controllers
• Electrical control room operators
PURPOSE
This procedure outlines the process for visiting operational employees at their workplace with the aim that:
• employees have regular contact with their manager;
• employees are seen in the operational location in which they work to confirm that they are operating in a safe and competent manner;
• line managers can check the location and equipment is in good working order; and
• employees have an opportunity to discuss any safety, operational or personal matters relevant to their capability with their line manager.
The employee visit does not replace the need for the health and safety inspection as per NR/L3/OPS/045/1.01 so the requirement to check that the location and equipment is in good working order is an interim and brief one designed primarily to identify issues which might be impacting on an individual’s ability to operate safely.
The visit to operational employees is also, but not exclusively, an opportunity for the line manager to collect competence evidence.
