This Specification applies to all works and activities to be carried out on those services located on Railtrack owned infrastructure and Major Stations where there may be a risk of damage to, or danger from, Surface or Buried Services. These works and activities include actions carried out under contract to Railtrack or outside parties. They may include (but are not limited to) the following:

• site investigation.

• excavation.

• insertion of spikes, probes, piles or posts.

• access adjacent to or over Services.

This Specification applies to the design, pre-tender and construction phases of work within the scope of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 1994 (referred to hereafter as the CDM Regulations). It also applies to work undertaken within the scope of this Specification which is not subject to the CDM Regulations.

A list of References and Supporting Documents is provided for information in Appendix A.

PURPOSE

This Specification defines the requirements for the development and approval of a safe system of work to minimise the risk arising from damage to and danger from, those services located on Railtrack owned infrastructure and Major Stations where the ground provides containment or forms a significant part of the support given to that particular service.
