Space conditioning is a major source of GHG emissions in the U.S.. Electric heat pumps (HPs) are an efficient alternative to fuel-fired space conditioning. However, the performance of conventional HPs declines in colder climates. To address this challenge, the U.S. Department of Energy launched the Cold Climate Heat Pump Challenge in late 2021 to accelerate the deployment of the next generation of space heat pumps. This session brings together a group of experts to discuss the development of the CCHP Challenge, key performance specifications, progress to date, outcomes from the field validation across the country and its impacts on existing residential buildings.
