Current and upcoming regulations concerning disinfection practices for drinking water will have a significant impact on many utilities. While chlorine has been the disinfectant of choice for most systems, new regulations are resulting in a shift to alternative disinfection technologies. The AWWA Research Foundation has funded the development of a handbook that addresses the use of three alternative disinfection technologies for small systems--ozone, chlorine dioxide, and ultraviolet radiation. The main focus of the handbook is primary disinfection. This paper presents an overview of the handbook. The handbook, Alternative Disinfection Technologies for Small Drinking Water Systems, is AWWA publication order number 90619.
