This slide presentation outlines information on the concept of Crime Prevention Through
Environmental Design (CPTED) and its three central tenets: Natural Access Control;
Natural Surveillance; and,
Territorial Reinforcement. The presentation lists the elements of a more secure site layout, and gives four examples of how CPTED was used when designing new buildings, a new site, and a new facility. The presentation lists 10 easy ways to improved security that include:
separate site areas that serve private and
public functions;
locate parking areas away from critical
facilities;
use natural means to route employees,
deliveries and visitors to their destinations;
consider employee functions and group
work areas accordingly;
limit employee site access;
use "Exit Only" doors as much as possible;
use employees to surveil critical assets
during the course of their duties;
use architectural and landscaping features
to provide natural adversarial delay;
consider line-of-site, adversarial hiding
places, landscaping and lighting during site
layout; and,
emphasize policies and procedures over
security hardware. Includes figures.
