Overview
The work covered by this Standard Activity Methodology is for the delivery of rail, types CEN60EI, flat bottomed BS113A and 75kg conductor rail to pre-determined sites throughout Network Rail using the Rail Delivery Train (RDT). The RDT can accommodate up to 32 specific rail lengths of 72, 1081 144, 180 and 216 meters and can discharge an individual rail or a pair of rails to the four food, six foot or cess in approximately 11 minutes.
The RDT is hauled by a locomotive and consists of 14 vehicles marshaled in the following order:-
• Chute wagon
• Manipulator wagon
• One leading roller wagon
• Two carrier wagons additionally fitted with clamps
• Eight Roller wagons
• Locomotive
The overall length of the RDT is approximately 300 meters.
The RDT travels at walking pace (approximately 5mph) whilst the rail is being discharged. Wherever possible the RDT will be hauled by either a class 66/67/60/73 locomotive which are fitted with a slow speed control facility. This facility allows the speed of the locomotive to be automatically set and controlled. Some of the older type locomotives do not have a slow control facility and therefore rely on the driver to control the speed of the locomotive, which can fluctuate between 3 and 8mph. In circumstances where the route availability restricts the use of class 66/67/60 locomotives, it is permissible, under Derogation No 05/111/DGN to use an older type locomotive without a slow speed control facility. When this situation occurs the RDT Supervisor will advise the Engineering Supervisor in charge of the worksite and other persons working within the vicinity of the RDT.
The delivery operation will be carried out in accordance with the RDT Operations Manual and the relevant sections of the Rule Book.
