This powerpoint presentation presents study goals that included: determine a novel approach for characterizing the early
stages of corrosion;
attempt to understand the mechanisms of surface
corrosion on copper; and,
examine the effects of inhibitors, i.e
orthophosphate, on copper corrosion.
Experimental approach included the following:
pieces of pure copper were cut into 1 x 1 in<sup>2</sup> sections;
water conditions for the test solutions were 120 mg/L sulfate,
3 mg/L Cl2, 10 mg/L DIC, 60 mg/L chloride and 6 mg/L
orthophosphate;
pH was controlled at 6.5, 7, 8 and 9 with coupons
suspended in stagnated test water for 6 and 24 hrs; and,
after samples were dried, images were acquired in air
with tapping-mode AFM.
