British Defence Standards
This Defence Standard specifies requirements for expanded polystyrene (EPS) mouldings for use in a variety of applications such as load spreading and shock absorbing. It covers five grades having nominal densities of 16, 24, 32, 64 and 80 kgm-3, the higher densities having greater mechanical strength.
This standard is intended for quality control. Design authorities shall satisfy themselves that the quality defined in this standard, in conjunction with the relevant drawing, shall meet their design requirements. For aerospace applications attention is drawn to the provisions of British Standards 2G 100 and 3G 100.
Mouldings are available as two types, general purpose (GP) and explosive compatible (QX)
The mouldings may be suitable for certain applications where compatibility with explosives is a requirement. However, compatibility with all explosives in all environments has not been established and Design Authorities should seek advice on particular applications through TA (Pkg) to ESTC via Sec MPMWG, DES WpnsEng-Pkg1, Weapons Operating Centre Engineering Team, Fir 3b, #4304, MoD Abbey Wood South, Bristol; Ext: 030679 34479. Further information may be obtained from Defence Standard 13-102: Testing of Materials which are Required to be Compatible with Explosives.
