Pilot-scale organic chloramine testing at the University of Waterloo has been accomplished with four parallel recirculating pipe loops. Water samples have been collected from the pilot-scale pipe loops to study the effect of pipe material, water source and distribution retention time on the relative amounts of organic and inorganic chloramines present. High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), when coupled with amperometric detection, permits the direct determination of inorganic chloramine (monochloramine and dichloramine) separate from the organic chloramine species. HPLC and standard analytical methods were employed to monitor both inorganic chloramine and organic chloramine formation and decay. Includes 8 references, table, figures.
